Objectifs :
Improve written presentation skills, for scientific publications in journals, and for the preparation of the PhD thesis. The course will focus on publications in basic biological and molecular research.

Programme :
Day 1: Learn about different types of publications (review article, research article), different types of journals (subscription journals versus open access, overlay journals; risk of predatory journals offering open access). Structure of a typical scientific publication (abstract, introduction, results, discussion, materials and methods, references), and strategies of organizing data and preparing a manuscript.
Learn how to build scientific arguments based on new data, and how to position scientific arguments in the context of existing literature.
Procedures of submitting scientific manuscripts and depositing raw data (data repositories, DOIs); preprints, copyright issues. Editorial procedures and peer review.
Day 2: We will examine a scientific manuscript for its strengths and weaknesses of presentation. Group discussions will be organized, to raise awareness of the following points: What is the scientific context? What is the scientific question and why is it important? What are the experimental strategies to answer the question, what are the findings, and how do the findings advance our knowledge? The goal will be to learn how to improve a manuscript.
